The "Accelerator" research area is one of the core scientific areas at DESY and a defining part of the DESY strategy. With the Centre for Accelerator Science and Technology (CAST), the research area has a visible, representative identification and contact point on campus.
This new building will create additional space alongside the accelerator control room (BKR) in order to improve work processes and replace some existing temporary facilities.
The centerpiece of the new building is the accelerator control room. Its size and location determine the cubature of the building and thus define the footprint - an irregular pentagon rounded on all sides. It functions as a showcase in which visitors can immerse themselves in the world of science and experience the current state of research at first hand.
With seven storeys, the new building towers above most of the surrounding buildings and the transparency of the façade expresses the importance of the particle accelerators for the science location and the philosophy of the open campus.
Generous room heights, daylight, optimal room acoustics and sustainable and healthy materials will characterize the interior design in all areas. From the upper floors and especially the accelerator control room, scientists will have a spectacular, inspiring view over the campus.
