Pooling expertise, sharing infrastructure and resources, organizing collaboration - that's what the innovation ecosystem is all about

Innovation as a social task

Innovations from the scientific field are essential for the future viability of service societies. Global and local challenges lead to a diverse need for advanced solutions: New technologies, processes, materials and products should provide future generations with the best possible framework conditions for economic productivity and prosperity, for the preservation of biodiversity and security.

Policymakers are therefore investing in the development of networks and infrastructure to promote technological and economic progress - from the EU Commission to the federal government to the level of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The targeted interaction of infrastructure and competence networks is called an innovation ecosystem. Innovative solutions for the future of medicine, the environment, mobility and information technology are being jointly developed across the boundaries of state institutions and companies: All players contribute what they can do best.

The innovation ecosystem in Science City is based on the world-renowned research infrastructure in Hamburg Bahrenfeld. The combination of usable large-scale research equipment - in particular the PETRA, FLASH and European XFEL particle accelerators - is unique in Europe. The combination with excellent university and non-university facilities at the site offers a wide range of opportunities for testing and maturing innovative ideas. Highly specialized laboratories, workshops and commercial space are available for every stage of a company's development in specially created buildings on site.

The expertise of all Science City partners flows together in the ecosystem to support innovation - for example, to advise companies on research issues or to create suitable workspaces. Knowledge is jointly created and shared in order to optimize the often lengthy processes from innovative idea to marketable product - this is a key advantage of the innovation ecosystem at Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld.

"Close collaboration between research and industry means that solutions for socially relevant challenges, such as material development or environmental protection, can be found more quickly and often more cost-effectively. With our innovation ecosystem at DESY , we are creating the ideal environment for new deep-tech innovations."
