The "Center for Hybrid Nanostructures" (CHyN) has created the framework conditions for successful, closely networked interdisciplinary research in the scientific disciplines of physics, biology, chemistry and nanosciences on the Hamburg Bahrenfeld campus.
The Department of Physics is mainly involved in the CHyN, but there are numerous links to other scientific institutions on campus. One of the scientific goals of the CHyN is to analyze the properties of solids and bio-materials on the nanoscale, to adapt and combine them in order to ultimately develop new materials - hybrid nanostructures - for chemical, biological and medical applications.
The successful combination of nano-semiconductor structures with biological material has huge application potential and could, for example, replace destroyed human sensory cells with tiny bioelectronic implants.
