Urban development as a hands-on and immersive experience. Directly opposite the Bahrenfeld harness racing track, Infocenter Science City at Albert-Einstein-Ring 10 has opened as a meeting point and information center open to all.
On Thursday, June 30, 2022, Dr. Stefanie von Berg, Head of the District Office Altona, Prof. Dr. Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Heinrich Graener, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences at the University of Hamburg and Dr. Andreas Kleinau, CEO of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH, officially opened the new Infocenter for Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld .
The exhibition brings visitors closer to the exciting developments and challenges of an urban development project that has been underway for around two decades: experienced contact persons, exhibition boards, development plans, free information material, handcrafted city models and edited original plans from several participation workshops on the districts at Volkspark ensure that the Science City can be vividly imagined. The exhibition will be gradually expanded to include individual exhibits, multimedia presentations and audio-visual demonstrations.
The Infocenter Science City is always open on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 14:00 and Thursdays from 14:00 to 18:00 and is operated by Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH.
Next Sunday, July 3, 2022, the opening of the Infocenter will also be celebrated together with the local community. From 11:00 to 16:00, the Bahrenfeld auf Trab interest group, the Juno 23 youth center, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH will hold a joint open and free district festival at the flea market area at the Bahrenfeld trotting track, Juno 23 and the new Infocenter Science City.
Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research, Equality and Districts: " Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld is a central location for the future in Hamburg. The topics of tomorrow are researched and worked on here. Science and research are drivers for the development of the entire city district and ensure innovation and new jobs for Hamburg. The development of the knowledge-based and at the same time lively quarter can only be achieved in close cooperation with the neighborhood. I am therefore delighted that a new meeting place for all citizens has been created at Infocenter . Here, interested parties can find out about the development of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and the numerous opportunities for participation. I cordially invite all Hamburg residents to take advantage of the wide range of services offered by the information center."
Dr. Dorothee Stapelfeldt, Senator for Urban Development and Housing: " Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld should develop international appeal with its own science-driven profile and its innovative and integrated districts. Scientific excellence should be embedded in an attractive urban environment and a district should be created in which scientists enjoy working creatively and interdisciplinarily. Science City is about much more than a location for science and living. It is the high aspiration to interweave and further develop a mixed district with new attractive places and spaces together with the existing structures. The opening of the Infocenter is an important building block in communicating the plans to the district, informing citizens and involving them."
Dr. Stefanie von Berg, Head of the District Office Altona: Science City Hamburg-Bahrenfeld will be an innovative district. Together, we have the strong will to design this new district in such a way that science, commerce and living are truly interlinked. When top-class scientists from all over the world work and live here with their families, Bahrenfeld will become more diverse and international. In order for this vision of the future to become reality, it is important that we take the people here in the district with us on the journey. The new Infocenter will play its part in this and I am sure that it will attract many visitors."
Dr. Andreas Kleinau, CEO of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH: "Living next door to people who make atoms visible? Living where award-winning researchers track down dark matter? In Science City, this is becoming the new normal. Here, excellent science and the city of tomorrow also mix in everyday life and become a vibrant part of Hamburg - green, diverse, barrier-free and seamlessly connected to the neighborhood. The new Infocenter Science City is a first showcase for this future. It is an open meeting place for everyone: for students, international scientists and the entire neighborhood."
Prof. Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors: "Through a unique symbiosis of research, innovation, business and society, Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld can develop a huge appeal for Hamburg and the whole of Germany. The Science City-Infocenter is a new place where we can intensify the exchange between the individual players, especially with our neighbors - bringing science and the city closer together."
Prof. Dr. Heinrich Graener, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences at Universität Hamburg: " Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld is of great importance for the future development of Universität Hamburg, especially the natural sciences. On the modern campus, cutting-edge research on photon and nanosciences, particle, astro and mathematical physics, materials science, biological and infection research as well as Data Science and artificial intelligence meets an innovative teaching and learning environment with lecture halls, multifunctional workplaces for students, a canteen and a future-oriented library including media supply. The newly opened Infocenter is a showcase for the urban development of Science City Bahrenfeld, which will be particularly science-driven."
The Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld: Knowledge finds the city
In the future, top international research, university education, innovative companies and lively residential areas will come together at Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld to form a new 125-hectare urban space. This consists of several sub-areas that merge into one another in terms of space and content: a main scientific development area around the German Electron Synchrotron DESY, natural science departments of the University of Hamburg and other renowned institutes, an innovation and technology center as well as a mixed-use, lively neighborhood with a residential focus. The entire area will be linked by new infrastructure, attractive open spaces and by connecting new living and working environments with the existing neighborhoods of Bahrenfeld and Lurup. People and institutions in the surrounding area will be actively involved in the entire process and intensively involved in the overall development from an early stage.
The municipal Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH is responsible for bringing together the individual development strands and coordinating the stakeholders involved. The Senate Chancellery of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the authorities for Urban Development and Housing (BSW), for Transport and Mobility Transition (BVM), for Science, Research, Equality and Districts (BWFGB), for Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA) as well as the University of Hamburg, DESY, Hamburg Invest Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft (HIE), Landesbetrieb Immobilienmanagement und Grundvermögen (LIG) and the district office Altona are involved.
