The fastest molecular processes in water

Prof. Dr. Robin SantraDESY and University of Hamburg)

Public evening lecture as part of the WISSENSWERTE lecture series

The existence of liquid water on the Earth's surface is closely linked to the existence of life on our planet. The way water works in organisms and in other areas of nature is based on the molecular structure of water and the molecular processes that can take place in water. The most basic of these processes are so fast that they occur in less than a millionth of a millionth of a second. In this lecture, you will learn how experiments using X-ray free-electron lasers in close combination with methods from theoretical physics make it possible to observe these processes. This research enables, for example, a better understanding of the molecular mechanism by which water contributes to the therapeutic benefits of radiotherapy.

The lecture will take place as part of the CMWS Waterdays at DESY .
