The sun—just a normal star?

The sun—just a normal star?

A quick glance at the sun makes it appear yellow, round, and somewhat boring. That's not true! Upon closer inspection, you can see a variety of phenomena on the sun's surface, such as spots, explosions, and turbulent currents.

This raises questions whose answers also have a direct impact on life on Earth: Are the phenomena observed on the Sun normal? Has the Sun always looked like this? Or is it undergoing changes that could affect life on Earth? How old is the Sun anyway? How long will the Sun live, and what will happen to Earth then? And how do we know all this? What else would we like to know about the Sun?

This Science Café is a hybrid event, so our guests have the choice of participating live on the DESY campus or via Zoom. We would be delighted to welcome as many guests as possible live!
