Science City is located in the district of Altona. The district office Altona is one of seven in Hamburg. It looks after the interests of all 280,000 inhabitants of the district.

The Altona Town Hall is a magnificent white building in neo-classical style. The forecourt is planted with shrubs and flowerbeds. An equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm the 1st is placed in front of the entrance.

Science City is one of the most important major projects in the district of Altona. The district office Altona is closely involved in the development of Science City in collaboration with many other stakeholders.

Two specialist departments in the district office are primarily responsible for the development of Science City: The Urban and Landscape Planning Department is responsible for urban development planning, expert opinions and competitions and coordinates the district's urban development concerns.

The social area management department plans and manages the district's social infrastructure. This involves closely linking the specialist requirements from the areas of health, youth welfare, elderly care, social affairs and sport and, in some cases, active district development and redevelopment.
