Health research in 4D

Four areas of innovation for the benefit of patients

At Fraunhofer ITMP, with its five sites in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Göttingen, Berlin and Penzberg, the focus is on researching and developing innovative ways to detect, diagnose and treat diseases at an early stage. Our mission statement is clear: we focus on superior, innovative solutions for cost-intelligent diagnostics and therapy in order to promote patient well-being. True to the motto "Health Research in 4D" - the linking of drugs, devices, diagnostics and data - we are working to revolutionize the transfer of ideas and technology and to effectively transfer research results into medical applications and bring them to patients.

Small molecules, big breakthroughs

In our state-of-the-art laboratories, we focus on drug discovery and health data processing. We have advanced high-throughput screening systems, diverse substance libraries and a broad spectrum of established assay formats. Our focus is on small molecules, which continue to be the leading class of drugs. What sets us apart is the seamless collaboration between our laboratory scientists and data scientists who work together to create innovative solutions.

We are also ideally positioned in the area of medical Data Science : With the "Fraunhofer Edge Cloud" and a toolbox of algorithms and databases, we offer a high-performance infrastructure. This enables us to use state-of-the-art technologies and develop creative solutions to meet the challenges of medical research and development.

Screening technology: the foundation of our progress/research

Our aim is to formulate and validate hypotheses for curing diseases. Based on this, we search for diagnostic and therapeutic answers with chemical substances and transfer them into preclinical development. We test our results in innovative, complex in vitro test systems based on pluripotent stem cells or organoids derived from them, such as a blood-brain barrier model. As an EU-OPENSCREEN site (European Research Infrastructure Consortium ERIC) and as part of the repurposing platform REMEDI4ALL, we are an important player in an established network of academic and clinical partners in Europe. This collaboration enables us to conduct groundbreaking research together with leading institutions and make significant advances in medicine.

Partnerships that promote progress

Together with University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) , we operate translational laboratories in the fields of kidney research and neuroimmunology. We have also established a unit for structural virology with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine and the BMBF Rosenthal junior research group and have entered into a partnership with DESY for protein structure elucidation. For our clients, we offer the creation of decentralized data spaces, real and synthetic cohorts as well as tools and platforms for the analysis of complex data, for example with knowledge graphs. In the constantly growing field of medical Data Science , we are strengthening the joint expertise of the five ITMP locations in order to derive more comprehensive knowledge and develop innovative solutions for the pharmaceutical industry.

"Science City is to become the heart of all scientific research activities of the Fraunhofer society in Hamburg. Here we want to give our chemists, nanotechnologists, biologists, physicists, pharmacologists, physicians and data scientists a new common home and establish an integrated offering for business and science."
