NovocarboAltona into the tecHHub Hamburg in Innovationspark Altona Innovationspark
When it comes to climate protection, coal has no future. Unless, that is, it is biochar, such as that produced by the Hamburg-based start-up Novocarbo. This is so climate-friendly that its production can even be combined with the allocation of emission certificates.
Novocarbo redefines an ancient craft
Caspar von Ziegner, the founder of Novocarbo, first studied economics and then industrial engineering before working for the Dutch company Alliander for a good six years. Most recently, he was employed there as head of business development at the gas and electricity network operator. During this time, he stumbled upon the potential of biochar to reduce CO₂ emissions. After his retirement in 2025, Karl Kolmsee took over the management of Novocarbo.
The production of biochar has a long history. During excavations in southern France, a simple charcoal kiln dating back to the 8th century BC was discovered. Novocarbo therefore primarily offers a modern and advanced version of this traditional process. The process used then and now is called pyrolysis. It involves decomposing organic compounds at high temperatures and largely in the absence of oxygen. Unlike combustion, the carbon is permanently bound in the biochar, which is an important aspect in the age of climate change.
