A building under construction is surrounded by scaffolding to which several "Riedel Bau" banners are attached. In the foreground, a topping-out wreath with green branches and blue ribbons is being hoisted by a crane. A flag with the "DESY" logo is attached to the wreath.
The DESYUM in Hamburg Bahrenfeld is more than just a multimedia exhibition center. From summer 2025, the six-storey building is set to become a meeting place for researchers, visitors and residents.

In future, it will form a central public contact point alongside the existing InfoCenter Science City.
The visitor center includes meeting rooms, an auditorium, a cafeteria, offices and an exhibition about the renowned research center DESY.

"The DESYUM is a new landmark for Hamburg as a city of innovation," summarized DESY Director Helmut Dosch at today's press event.

Designed by HPP Architekten, the building design is also based on high sustainability standards. The measures include concrete-saving construction techniques, recycled aluminum for the façade, heating with waste heat from the DESY particle accelerator and a biodiverse green roof.

The DESYUM also plays a key role for the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld - a project that is unique in Europe and combines the concept of joint urban development of science, research and teaching with business, work, living, leisure and recreation.

Hamburg's Senator for Science, Katharina Fegebank, also emphasized: "Science City is a unique urban development project in Europe that will have even more appeal in the future."

The neighboring "Quartiere am Volkspark" will also create a mixed-use, lively neighborhood with a diverse mix of apartments, social infrastructure, services and retail outlets as well as high-quality open spaces.

Since 2022, interested parties have been able to find out more about urban development in the district at InfoCenter at Albert-Einstein-Ring and on guided tours.

Current information, including information on the participation events in Science City, can be found on the homepage of this website.

Anyone interested in the project should mark a date in their calendar now: The first Science City Day will take place on June 1, 2024 - with an extensive program of numerous partner stakeholders.
