Dialogue and exhibition on the winning design for the neighborhoods at Volkspark opened
Around 150 interested parties made their way to the central lost and found office at Luruper Chaussee on 19.09.2024 to get a first-hand impression of the future design of the districts at Volkspark . Around 3,800 new apartments as well as leisure and sports facilities, social facilities, schools and a university campus are to be built in the districts at Volkspark . The event marked the preliminary conclusion of a series of participation formats that have accompanied the competition launched in 2023 for the design of urban development and open spaces in the districts at Volkspark .
Three sub-quarters
The selected office Cobe (Copenhagen) first presented five overarching neighborhood development strategies to the interested neighbors and other guests and then their application in the various sub-neighborhoods. This is because the "Campusviertel", the "neue Gartenstadt" and the "Naturquartier" are to be given their own qualities and character within the neighborhoods at Volkspark .
In "Campusviertel", a system of urban squares and public functions underlines the urban character. Buildings of the University of Hamburg, including a lecture hall center, are to be located here. One of the two entrances to the new underground S-Bahn station is also planned here.
The basic idea of the adjacent "new garden city" to the east is open residential block structures and green courtyards. To the east of the future bridge over the A7 is the "Naturquartier". A "green corridor" connects the sub-districts with each other, but also with the eponymous Volkspark Altona and the other surrounding green spaces. It also integrates part of the sports areas. The development concept provides for the neighborhood to be largely free of motorized traffic and the S-Bahn connection.
Praise and lots of questions
In addition to much approval of the design, there were also numerous questions and comments at the event, which the design team answered together with representatives of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH and the Department for Urban Development and Housing. For example, whether the planned development would take into account the air circulation from the surrounding parks and biodiversity. The Cobe team reported that biologists were involved in the design planning and that other specialist planners will be working on the functional planning that is now beginning.
The preservation of the existing buildings on the current harness racing track was also of interest. Although the draft provides for the possibility of preserving the grandstand building, for example, the building structures and possible subsequent uses must first be examined.
For many of those present, improving the existing urban environment, particularly around the transport hub on Ebertallee, is also an important next step. Criticism was voiced regarding the timetable for the S-Bahn and the planning of sports facilities. It is currently assumed that the S-Bahn will be realized in the 2040s on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition. The planning of the sports areas was developed in cooperation with the Hamburg Sports Association. The planned relocation of the existing allotment gardens to the future cover of the A7 was also addressed. The Department of Urban Development and Housing is currently in discussions with the associations regarding the timing of the relocation, which is a prerequisite for the development of the "Naturquartier".
"What can you look forward to?"
Bahrenfeld is already a district with high residential and leisure qualities. So what can we look forward to with the design, asked one participant at the end of the event. The Cobe team summarized the added value as follows: "We are linking the district much more closely to Volkspark Altona . In the neighborhoods at Volkspark , new community places and publicly usable spaces are being created that perhaps do not yet exist in this form. There will also be an exchange with the scientific community from which everyone can benefit."
