Planning teams and jury members gave an up-to-date insight into the "Neighborhoods at Volkspark"
Despite the beautiful summer weather, around 70 interested citizens made their way to the Esther Bejarano School on July 7 to gain an up-to-date insight into the competitive dialog on the future districts at Volkspark . Since October 2023, various planning teams have been developing ideas for urban design, open space and the distribution of uses in the new Science City neighborhood, which combines a diverse range of housing with social and educational infrastructure, university facilities and public space. In February 2024, three teams were selected for the final processing phase: Cobe A/S (Copenhagen); Karres en Brands Bv., (Hilversum, NL) & ADEPT (Copenhagen) and Mandaworks AB (Stockholm) & LOLA Landscape Architects B.V., (Rotterdam). The planners then presented their revised designs to the citizens and, together with Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH as the awarding authority, were available to answer questions.
Building heights and mixed use
Of particular interest to those present were the heights of the planned buildings and the mix of science, housing and neighborhood activities in the district. The character of the open spaces was also a key topic. Other questions concerned the organization of mobility, noise development and the sequence of the various construction phases.
This gave the members of the selection committee, who were also present, a local picture of the mood. "It is very valuable for me to be able to take this into the final meeting," emphasized Reiner Nagel, chairman of the committee and board member of the Bundestiftung Baukultur. Senior Building Director Franz Josef Höing and the Chairman of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH, Dr. Andreas Kleinau, also took part in the event - as did members of the district delegation, who are accompanying the competitive dialog as experts.
Result in September
Which of the three teams ultimately wins the race in the competitive dialog will be presented in September. At a discussion event and exhibition, all interested parties will then be able to get a clearer picture.
