Revitalization of existing buildings

An important basis for the development of Science City is the provision of suitable land and buildings. To this end, Landesbetrieb Immobilienmanagement und Grundvermögen (LIG) has successively transferred land and buildings to the FHH portfolio.

For example, in the Albert-Einstein-Ring area. Here on the so-called "Campus West", as part of the scientific core of the Science City research campus, the LIG has been acquiring existing office buildings since May 2019. This involves a total of 94,000 square meters and 13 buildings with around 90,000 square meters of rental space. With the existing space, there is already the possibility of relocating institutes or parts of the University of Hamburg.

At Albert-Einstein-Ring 8-10, an office building from the 1990s was refurbished and revitalized for the University of Hamburg by LIG as the owner and landlord. On behalf of the Ministry of Science of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, LIG worked with the University of Hamburg to convert the building within 14 months. The interior of the building was adapted for modern teaching and research operations.

In close cooperation with the municipal stakeholders and the University of Hamburg - in particular Department 85, Construction Management - the office space was redesigned in a contemporary and user-friendly way. The conversion of the office space extends over a total of four floors. There are ideas for the fifth floor.

Opportunity space for institutions from science, research, teaching and innovation

The starting signal was then given for the 2024 summer semester: scientific groups from the digital natural sciences and bioinformatics as well as students on the basic physics practical course at Universität Hamburg moved into the building complex in Science City.

In addition, the joint location of the "House of Computing and Data Science" (HCDS), the "Center for Data and Computing in Natural Sciences" (CDCS) and the "Center for Bioinformatics" (ZBH) at Albert-Einstein-Ring has created an interdisciplinary competence center for digitization in the natural sciences.

This demonstrates the advantage of using existing buildings: lengthy and cost-intensive new buildings can be avoided in the long term and gray energy can be conserved. This potential in the existing buildings at Albert-Einstein-Ring will be exploited by other science, research, teaching and innovation institutions in the coming years.
