Integrated technology and start-up center brings new ideas from research into practice
It was only a small ground-breaking ceremony for those involved, but a big step for DESY and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld on their way to becoming a beacon for innovation in the west of Hamburg. Together, representatives from DESY, the federal government and the City of Hamburg officially launched the construction of DESY Innovation Factory .
Two locations
By 2027, a total of over 8,500 square meters of work space will be created at two locations - the main site on the DESY campus and a second nearby at Innovationspark Altona . The DESY Innovation Factory building on the campus will house complex laboratories, offices and open working environments that optimally promote the transfer of knowledge and technology from research to industry and society.
Central anchor function
"The DESY Innovation Factory offers founders excellent conditions to bring new ideas from research into practice even faster," says Katharina Fegebank, Hamburg's Second Mayor and Senator for Science. Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, is convinced: " DESY Innovation Factory will take on a central anchor function in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and enormously expand Germany's potential as a science and technology location."
From pre-founders to scale-ups
The makerspace at DESY Innovation Factory already provides around 120 square meters of equipped experimental space to validate product ideas and develop prototypes using 3D printing, laser technology, mechanics and electronics. The offer is therefore aimed at the entire spectrum of entrepreneurial start-ups, from pre-founders to scale-ups (companies in the early stages that have already found their target market).
