Campus West is located between Luruper Chaussee and Notkestraße. It forms the center of the of the scientific infrastructure with top-class facilities such as the research center DESY, the University of Hamburg and the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter. of Matter.
On behalf of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the master plan for Campus West was developed by Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH in close cooperation with the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, the Ministry of Science, Research, Equality and Districts, the district office Altona, the University of Hamburg, the research center DESY and the Max Planck Society.
Construction projects and urban space
The dynamic development of Campus West is being driven forward by pioneering construction projects such as the Hamburg Fundamental Interactions Laboratory HAFUN), the DESYUM visitor center and the DESY Innovation Factory I. The major PETRA IV project also fits into this outstanding research landscape and creates ideal conditions for the departments of chemistry, physics and biology at the University of Hamburg. In the newly opened Center for Digital Natural Sciences and Data Science at Albert-Einstein-Ring 8-10, these can already be experienced at first hand.
A central aspect of the planning is the linking of Campus West with its public spaces and the city. In future, the previously isolated sections of the campus and the Albert Einstein site will be connected by generous open spaces, which will also facilitate the transition to the Volkspark neighborhoods. For security reasons, access to sensitive areas will remain restricted in order to guarantee research operations.

Promoting the innovation location
The framework plan promotes the innovation location through good framework conditions for research and exchange. It is designed to be flexible enough to react to changing conditions. Short-term projects or other changes can thus be seamlessly integrated as integral components of campus planning in order to further strengthen Science City.
Barrier-free and climate-friendly
The Campus West is striving for a development towards a biodiverse, sustainable and climate-friendly area. The framework plan aims to inclusive and barrier-free campus that is characterized by climate-oriented design. characterized by climate-oriented design. The efficient use of space, local open space provision, sensitive rainwater sensitive rainwater management and the circular use of materials are at the are the focus here. The energy-efficient design and supply of the buildings are also are also essential components of this sustainable campus development.
"In close cooperation between science and urban development, the framework plan creates the basis for an urban and lively urban space in Science City. In future, we will offer researchers, students and visitors the best conditions for working, researching, learning, exchanging ideas and spending time here."
