DESY Café: Dark Matter – Brought to Light!

A view inside the cleanroom, showing three female researchers in protective gear and a technical experimental setup.
ALPS II is an experiment designed to search for new types of elementary particles.

The Mysteries of Matter

A mysterious form of matter appears to be at work in many cosmic phenomena: for example, so-called dark matter holds galaxies together, acts as gravitational lenses that allow us to glimpse the early universe, and creates the structures in space without which we would not exist.

Despite these numerous clues, dark matter remains a mystery and has so far eluded all attempts to identify it.

Have research groups around the world been looking for the wrong suspects all this time?

At DESY Hamburg, ALPS II has begun the search for extremely light, novel elementary particles. Learn how the experiment aims to shed light on dark matter, what this has to do with particle physics and the theory of relativity, and what other experiments might DESY at DESY in this area.
