Is the Gulf Stream running out of steam?

The scientific graphic shows a hot zone in the ocean between Africa and America.
Lecture by Prof. Dr. Johanna Baehr: Is the Gulf Stream running out of steam?

The Gulf Stream ensures a comparatively mild climate in Northern Europe and is considered its heat pump. Speculation arises with irregular regularity, and it is not without drama: Could the Gulf Stream soon break down? And would we then be facing an ice age?

We want to approach these and other questions on the basis of the current state of scientific knowledge. In doing so, we also want to clarify the state of the North Atlantic, what effects of climate change we are already seeing, and what we can say about the possible development of the climate in Europe.

This Science Café is a hybrid event, so our guests have the choice of participating live on the DESY campus or via Zoom. We would be delighted to welcome as many guests as possible live!
